The
Welsh Kidney Patients’ Association
(WKPA) is an independent registered charity, which is dependant
on donations, gifts or grants.
It is the patients’ own organization, covering the whole
of Wales, with more than 2,000 members. It is run by patients and
carers for patients and carers.
We have been an all-volunteer group since 1982 and a registered
charity since 1995.
The charity is administered by its honorary officers and a management
committee, who are trustees of the charity. They are elected annually
at the Annual General Meeting held in October.
Membership is FREE and open to all pre-dialysis, dialysis and kidney
transplant patients and their carers.
We are affiliated to the National Kidney Federation (NKF), which
represents kidney patients throughout the UK. This allows WKPA
members to receive the NKF’s FREE quarterly magazine “Kidney
Life”. The NKF also provides a comprehensive selection of
patient information leaflets.
WHAT WE DO
The Association encourages setting-up local self-help/ support
groups for patients, their families and friends to share information
and experiences.
There is also a Befriender Service available at UHW, Cardiff and
Morriston Hospital, Swansea, for patients in need of support.
The WKPA publishes a FREE quarterly magazine - “Kidney Matters
Wales” which informs patients of current and new developments
in their treatment and levels of care. It also includes notices
of forthcoming events.
“Kidney Matters Wales” is also available on the WKPA’s
web-site
www.wkpa.org.uk
The Association supports the Welsh Transplant Team, to compete
at the British Transplant Games.
The Association has undertaken research of patient opinions through
patient surveys, providing Service Providers with patient information
on the level of care.
We provide modest financial support through our Welfare Fund,
for those patients who have trouble in meeting one-off expenditure
relating to their treatment which cannot be met by any other means.
The Association liaises with Hospital Dialysis Units, the Transplant
Unit and other support services.
The Association represents kidney patients on the Welsh Renal Clinical
Network; and the Cross-Party Kidney Group of the Welsh Assembly.

The WKPA web site, established in 2002, has
been developed especially for renal patients, their carers and
families. As webmaster of the site, I rely on patients throughout
Wales to send in information and news items on all renal matters
in the principality. Patients and carers can sign up to receive Kidney
Matters Wales, our magazine, which is also on-line to read,
and Kidney Life,
the magazine of the National
Kidney Federation. Should anyone be interested in the WKPA’s Befriending
Service which is available at both UHW and Morriston, there
is an on-line form to request information. The WKPA
frequently run surveys, and these are always added to the site
for those of you whoprefer to use the web. Links are made to
sites that have valid information for renal patients. There are
links to Children’s’sites, and we have a page for
children who may wish to put something up on-line.

a comprehensive site that provides information on claiming benefits,
holiday information and medical queries. In particular, there
is a wealth of information in the Cardiff
Patients Library. This was developed by a team of professionals
at UHW with the WKPA providing the patients representation. Caroline
Jones attended meetings over several months to help provide
this valuable source of information. The following is a list

to the committee and,I trust, to you our members. The WKPA web site
belongs to you,
the WKPA pays a grand total of £35 a year for hosting, and
for my own part,
I enjoy being webmaster.
