Who We Are and What We Do - ( English ) - ( Cymraeg )

The Welsh Kidney Patients Association (WKPA) is the patients own organisation covering all of Wales. We are independent and have been
an all volunteer group since 1982 and a registered charity since 1995. Our elected management committee are mainly patients and includes one of our renal consultants. Our President is Professor John Salaman and our Vice President is Dr. A.J. Williams. We have over 2200 members.
Our present Chair Person is Gareth Davies.

The WKPA covers all dialysis units throughout Wales.

Membership of the WKPA is free and is open to all dialysis and transplant patients in Wales and their carers, who receive our free quarterly magazine, "Kidney Matters, Wales" We have a befriending service and develop self-help groups for patients and their families to share information and experiences. We provide information and have a welfare fund for needy members.

We liaise with the hospital dialysis and transplant units and with social work departments and statutory authorities, and more recently with
the Welsh Assembly. We have an office within The University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff and work closely with the medical and administrative staff of the renal units. We have a good working relationship with Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust (now one of the largest NHS Trusts), meeting with senior Trust officers regularly.

One of our groups each year organises and finances the Welsh Transplant Games Team.

The WKPA web site, established in 2002, has been developed especially for renal patients, their carers and families. As webmaster of the
site, I rely on patients throughout Wales to send in information and news items on all renal matters in the principality. Patients and carers
can sign up to receive Kidney Matters Wales, our magazine, which is also on-line to read, and Kidney Life, the magazine of the National
Kidney Federation.
Should anyone be interested in the WKPA’s Befriending Service which is available at both UHW and Morriston, there is
an on-line form to request information. The WKPA frequently run surveys, and these are always added to the site for those of you who
prefer to use the web. Links are made to sites that have valid information for renal patients. There are links to Children’s’sites, and we
have a page for children who may wish to put something up on-line. The Transplant Team has a page too.

Web sites of health professionals who provide our care and other patient sites are there to access information. There are links to
Renal Patient View
and UK Blood and Transplant. The National Kidney Federation has a comprehensive
site that provides information on claiming benefits, holiday information and medical queries.
In particular, there is a wealth of information in the Cardiff Patients Library. This was
developed by a team of professionals at UHW with the WKPA providing the patients representation.
Caroline Jones
attended meetings over several months to help provide this
valuable source of information. The following is a list of headings that will show you how and where

What started out as a hobby for me in our spare bedroom has become a valuable asset
to the committee and,I trust, to you our members.
The WKPA web site belongs to you,
the WKPA pays a grand total of £35 a year for hosting, and for my own part,
I enjoy being webmaster.
Please send me any information that you think will interest your fellow patients/carers.
I welcome new ideas from all quarters.
